If you are thinking of bringing your pet with you to Costa Rica, then there are a few but vital documents, rules and regulations that you must be aware of.
If want to bring your pet like cat or dog to Costa Rica with you, then you need to prove to both Costa Rican customs and airlines officers that your pet is without any disease. Ensure that your animals vaccinations is upto date as well as schedule an exam with your veterinarian a few weeks before your departure date. Also, make sure that the vet has to fill out a health certificate stating that the pet is disease free plus has been vaccinated against is distemper, leptospirosis, rabies and parvovirus. The rabies vaccination must be mire than 4 weeks but less than a year old is required only for animals that are 4 months older. If you are coming from the US, animals entering Costa Rica have a health certificate issued by a licenced veterinarian and endorsed by a veterinary service veterinarian. Also, the examination for the certificate should be conducted within the 14 days before to travel to Costa Rica. Remember, the health certificate doesn't require to be signed by a notary public or nor it have to be authenticated by the consulate of Costa Rica. If you are coming from Canada with your pet, then you need an international health certificate completed and signed by a veterinarian as well as certify by the Canadian food inspection agency stating that your pet has all of the needed vaccinations. Once signed and certified, this document should be sent to the general consulate of Costa Rica in Ottawa for legal purposes. You have to enclose the original and a copy of the receipts with the documents. The customs officer will do a visual inspection of your pet once you have reached to Costa Rica, and double check the health certificate and Authorization from the Costa Rican health ministry. There are many people who claim that they were not asked for documents but it is best not to take risk. If the customs officer decides your animal looks ill or seems infected with disease or if you are missing any documents, the pet will either be temporarily released to your care or kept in a state kennel for upto 30 days. You have to work out an arrangement in the meantime either to have the animal shipped back by Costa Rica shipping company, arrange for the necessary paperwork as well as have animal cared for at a local veterinary clinic.
